Welcome!

Hey everyone! My name is Mark Cooper and I am honored and excited to be FBCS’s high school history teacher for the 2020–2021 school year! Included in this letter is an overview about myself and this school year.

ABOUT MYSELF
I live in Picayune, MS with my wife Marissa and daughter Maddie. We have a Yorkshire Terrier named Henry. I graduated from Quitman High School in 2006 and received my bachelor’s degree in Christian Studies from Mississippi College in 2010. I have two master’s degrees from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and graduated in December 2018 with a PhD in New Testament. I enjoy reading the Bible, exercising, listening to/playing music, and watching movies (especially superhero movies!).

I have always had a passion for teaching. Since being called into the ministry, I have served as a youth minister in four churches over the past decade. Through these positions God has equipped me to effectively teach within a classroom environment, organize group discussions, facilitate critical thinking, plan educational events or trips, and so much more. For me, history is one of the most fascinating and important subjects for students to learn. History is the record of humanities’ attempt to exist within the order of God’s creation. As such, every advancement in every subject can be located along the continuum of history.

HOMEWORK
Homework will be assigned weekly. Homework must be turned in handwritten. Students will be responsible for having all assignments prepared and ready to turn in at the beginning of each class in which the homework is due.

QUIZZES
Four quizzes will be made available for students to take every two weeks. The four quizzes will total 100 points. Any student who misses a quiz due to an absence will be allowed to make up the quiz on the following day as long as the absence is excused. Any unexcused absence will result in a “0” for the quiz.

BELL RINGERS
Every class will have a daily bell ringer activity to assess each student’s comprehension of the reading assignment of that day. Participation in the bell ringer assignment is mandatory as bell ringers make up ten percent of the nine-weeks grade.  Any unexcused absence will result in a “0” for the bell ringer activity.  In addition, bell ringers provide study material for tests as well as the comprehensive nine-week’s exam.

TESTS
There will be four tests given during each nine weeks (excluding the nine-weeks exam). These chapter tests will cover material presented in class lectures, discussions, and bell ringers. The nine-weeks exam will be comprehensive.

CALENDAR
Assignments, tests, and/or quizzes are updated weekly on the calendar on each class’s respective website. Students will be expected to be familiar with the assignments posted to the calendar. The calendar will be reviewed in class each Monday.

UPDATES
Parents or guardians can text the @message corresponding to your student’s class to the number 81010 to receive updates about  class activities, field trips, class parties, etc. Students will also receive a separate @message to remind them about tests, quizzes, assignments, etc. Remind messages will be sent out as often as possible. Since assignments, tests, and/or quizzes will be posted to the calendar, students should not rely upon a Remind message to remind them of the assignment and will be held responsible for staying up-to-date on their calendar.
