May 10-14

There is a semicolon and colon quiz Thursday. Students have physical materials and materials in Notability to prepare for this quiz.
EXAM: The following will be on our exam:
–there will be questions about research writing/parts of an essay (since we completed the research paper at the beginning of the quarter),
–literary devices (those are the questions about similes, metaphors, etc. that are on all of my exams),
–comma placement,
–semicolon and colon placement.

I’ll be sending home a study guide Wednesday. This study guide will be completed in class.

May 3-7

  • Monday, May 3rd: Commas quiz part 1. To prepare for this quiz, see the handout that was emailed Friday, April 30th, as well as the comma foldable. The highlighted portions of the foldable are what students will be quizzed on. If students need additional help, have them refer to the worksheets in Notability that we completed this week (Heading is Commas I; some students may have a hardcopy instead of physical copy).
  • This week, we will go over rules for Commas II-III on pages 30-34 of Grammar III book (the next grade book) to review all functions of the commas.
  • Quiz on Commas II-III on Thursday, May 6th. Students can refer to in-class practice and their comma foldable for studying purposes.
  • On Thursday, we will begin our semicolon/colon focus. I will give students the semicolon and colon pre-test as a pre-assessment (since we covered this material earlier this year). Then, have students take notes on the semicolon and colon by recording the rules on the provided worksheet. This material will be on the exam, as well as the comma material.
  • I will provide a mixture of class, partner, and independent work on semicolons/colons worksheet (two days). Use p. 36-37 of Grammar III workbook [This will involve introducing conjunctive adverbs!].

April 26-30

  • Monday-Wednesday: COMMA FOCUS: Students will put together pre-made foldable of comma rules as a way to review comma rules that we learned earlier this year.
  • They will also complete pages 26-34 of the Grammar III book (the next grade book) to review all functions of the comma. We will use a mixture of class, partner, and independent work to sharpen these skills! [Will need to review FANBOYS.] All of these pages will be emailed to students.
  • Comma test on Thursday.
  • Thursday-Friday: SEMICOLON AND COLON FOCUS: Give students the semicolon and colon pre-test as a pre-assessment (since we covered this material earlier this year). Then, have students take notes on the semicolon and colon by recording the rules on the provided worksheet.
  • Semicolon/Colon Test next Wednesday.

April 19-23

This Monday-Wednesday, students presented their research in the form of a Google Doc slideshow. Rubrics were sent home and grades are in Headmaster.

Thursday we will be reviewing the master grammar review students completed last week and will be correcting our work. Then, we will do a huge comma review. Students will have a test on commas next Thursday, April 29th. Students will have a foldable they can use as a review tool, as well as worksheets.

Friday is CHAOS, so no work on that day.

April 12-16

This week, I’ll be out for senior trip. However, students will be responsible for finishing their presentations in Google Slides while I’m gone. Students need to be prepared to present next Monday; presentations are worth 50 points. They have two class periods to finish this. Attached are the instructions (which they also have on their iPads). Presentation Format 2021

This week students will also complete a grammar review as well as complete Aspire testing.

March 29-April 1

The due date for the English research paper has been pushed to Wednesday, March 31st. Students need to ensure that they have the paper and the Works Cited printed! If your printer is broken, students must bring a parent note or parent email.

On Monday and Tuesday, we will be working on body paragraph 3 and the conclusion paragraph of the research paper.

On Wednesday-Thursday, we will be working on presentations in class. At this time, I don’t have a due date for presentations. I will have one once we begin working on them!

March 22-26

This week we will continue our research unit.

  • MONDAY: Students will continue to work on outline. Students need to have their outlines complete in Google Docs by Tuesday.
  • Tuesday: I will introduce research essay writing process. I will assist students in choosing and crafting their introduction paragraphs.
  • Tuesday-Thursday, I will do a deep dive into how to write body paragraphs based on the outline. Students will work independently to craft 3 body paragraphs (2 problem paragraphs, 1 solution paragraph).
  • Thursday-Friday, I will help students craft conclusion and construct Works Cited page.
  • MONDAY, 3/29: Research essay (2 full pages) + Works Cited due, printed.

March 15-19

RESEARCH PROJECT

Over the next few weeks, we are shifting gears to a research project. This research project consists of students finding 4 reputable sources, writing index research cards, writing an outline for their paper, writing the research paper and Works Cited, and finally compiling their research into a presentation that they will present.

I will help them every step of the way; most of this will be completed in class!

On Monday, students chose their topics and found and saved four websites they wish to use.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will write four research cards in class. These are due Thursday.

On Thursday and Friday, we will write outlines in class. These are due in Google Docs by Monday.

  • This week we will be focusing on ADVERBS. The adverb unit starts on page 236 and goes thru p. 253. We will look at adverbs, adverb phrases, and adverb clauses.
  • On THURSDAY, March 4th, we will have a quiz on adverbs on the material from pages 236-248.
  • Exams are next week! This exam will cover rhetorical devices used in Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream,” pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Students have been keeping up with their quizzes and tests over this quarter and can use those to help review. I’ll also be sending a study guide home this week.

Virtual Assignment (2 Days): Students will read the poem “This World” by Mary Oliver independently and annotate for 4 instances of imagery. Then, students are required to answer 2 discussion questions about the poem. This will prepare them to complete Day 2’s assignment, which requires students to write a paragraph response explaining how the use of imagery helps Oliver demonstrate a theme. Students must end the paragraph with a Christian worldview.

 Week 7

  • We will review Monday and Tuesday for test Wednesday on adjective phrases, adjectives clauses, misplaced modifiers, and comparative adjectives. We will use p. 232 and 235, as well as teacher-made review, to help us review.
  • Wednesday, 2/24: Test on adjective phrases, adjectives clauses, misplaced modifiers, and comparative adjectives.
  • Adverb Unit: Starting Wednesday, we will lecture and practice with pp. 236-242. Using these pages, I will use a variety of formative assessment, ranging from class examples, partner work, and finally independent work. All work will be checked in class.
  • Prepare for quiz on adverbs next Wednesday, 3/3.

February 8-12

Last week we turned in rhetorical analysis essays and began our adjective unit. This week, we will continue our adjective unit with a quiz mid-week and test on 2/23.

  • Monday we will continue adjective clauses [building on our knowledge of dependent clauses], p. 219-221. We will complete these pages with class examples, partner work, and finally independent work. All work will be checked in class.
  • Wednesday, 2/10: Students will have a quiz on identifying infinitive phrases, prepositional phrases, participial phrases (all functioning as adjectives), and adjective clauses. They will simply need to underline the phrase or clause, write the noun it is modifying, and write whether it is functioning as a prepositional, participial, infinitive phrase, or adjective clause.
  • After our quiz, we will start misplaced modifiers on p. 222-223.
  • Using page 224-227, we will introduce comparative adjectives.
  • End of week: Review for test Tuesday, 2/23, on adjective phrases, adjectives clauses, misplaced modifiers, and comparative adjectives.

February 1st-5th

This week, students will be writing an essay on Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech.” We made annotations on this speech last week, and this week students will be doing a rhetorical analysis–or analyzing King’s argument process in his speech.

We will be working on this in class consistently, but students will need to print it at home. It will be due, printed, Thursday, 2/4.

On Thursday, we will begin a new adjective unit. We will start by looking at prepositional and verbal phrases functioning as adjectives. A quiz will take place later next week. Use pages 215-217 in the grammar workbook to review this material.

January 25-29

This week, we will review for our nominative vs. objective case pronoun test, which will be Wednesday, 1/27. 

Students can use p. 170-174 + 180-181 to study, as well as teacher-made reviews that have been emailed. Students also need to have their nominative and objective case pronouns memorized, which are on index cards.

On Thursday and Friday, we will begin analyzing Martin Luther King’s speech “I Have a Dream” in preparation for a writing assignment next week.

  • MLK Holiday on Monday!
  • We will have a Spelling Bee on Tuesday in class. This is not a mandatory event, but students get some free points if they choose to participate!
  • Starting Tuesday/Wednesday, I will introduce Nominative, Objective, and Possessive Pronouns. We will complete textbook practice p. 171-174 over the course of the week.
  • At end of week, we will practice textbook pages on mixing Nominative Case and Objective Case pronouns.

This week, we will begin our PRONOUN unit.

–Monday, January 11th: Essay that we wrote this past week is DUE, printed. This essay was completed in class on Google Docs.
–Friday, January 15th: Test on Pronouns. Details:

-Students need to be able to complete a matching section based on their pronoun index cards,
-List the pronouns they needed to memorize (also on pronoun index cards),
-And choose correct verbs and antecedents for pronouns. Use pages 165-170 of Grammar Workbook to help with this.

January 3-8 Assignments & Assessments

Welcome to 2021! 🙂

This week in English 8, we will be turning our focus away from grammar for a bit and to writing. Students will be reading two informational texts and then writing an essay on which writer made their point better. This requires students to 1) analyze an author’s writing and 2) argue for their points of view/opinions.

UPDATE: Students will need to bring their typed essay to school to hand in, PRINTED, on Monday, 1/11. We will be writing this essay almost entirely in class. We will be typing our essays in Google Docs.

At the end of the week, I’ll be introducing types of pronouns. We will be making flashcards as we prepare for a quiz next week. I’ll be using p. 165 of the grammar book for this.

We will be reading a fictional piece and an informational piece and doing in-class writing assignments on both. So, no grammar quizzes or tests this week, but on Friday, students will have a quiz on the parts of a paragraph. I will also be grading students’ paragraphs (this will be preparing them for ASPIRE Standardized Testing in the spring).

Homework for Wednesday night, 11/4: Finish review packet (in Notability) started in class.

Due to Hurricane Zeta, the test on identifying S, CD, CX, and CD-CX sentences has been moved to Friday, November 6th. 

To prepare for this test, students may use their notes they took in class (most likely under their “SWABI List for Students” document in Notability).

Students can also use pages 277-284 of the grammar book (in Notability) to review.

This week, we will be preparing for this test as well as beginning an “analytical writing on fiction” mini-unit.

This week, we will master the compound-complex sentence. We will be building on our knowledge of simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, and finally, we will mix the four types of students.

Students will need to demonstrate that they can distinguish between these 4 types of sentences and know how to a) annotate them and b) place commas in them correctly.

This week we will be using p. 282-284 of our grammar book.

FRIDAY, 10/30, students will have a test on simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences. They will need to distinguish before the 4 types on this test.

This week, students need to work on memorizing the 18 subordinating conjunctions that I supply on Monday (but I’ve listed them below as well if you’d like to start studying!). They also need to know how to annotate complex sentences.

On Friday, 10/23, students will have a test on annotating complex sentences and listing all 18 subordinating conjunctions.
