Monday, February 14- Valentine’s Party- Please have students bring in a valentine for each classmate. We have 14 students in our class. Also, students may wear red or pink valentine shirts or Christian T-shirt and jean pants

Accelerated Reading: This 9-weeks, students will receive a reading grade for AR. Students will need to reach their point goal of 6 points and have an accuracy percentage of 90% or above to get an A in AR. Part of the grade will be based on students reaching the point goal and part on accuracy percentage. The AR grade is averaged into the reading grade. We have D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) time every day after lunch, and we have our own set of I-pads in class for students to take AR quizzes on books they read. Students read a book and take a short reading comprehension quiz on the I-pad. First Grade books are short, so they must get 100% on 2 quizzes to earn a whole point. Look on the FBCS webpage under library, click on the AR Home Connect Link, and sign up so that you can receive an email every time your child takes an AR quiz. Your child’s username is the first letter of his/her first name and the first four letters of his/her last name. The password is abc.
Homework (material to review and practice for tests)
Seatwork- Each week, I will send home any unfinished worksheets that students have not finished in class for homework. If your child has a lot of pages, I encourage them to do only a page or two a night. Please use these pages to review and practice the concepts we are learning. Also, I will send home checked seatwork to use to review.
Math– written-counting money, adding 2-digit numbers, telling time, adding 3 and 4 numbers, identify the greatest and least of 3 numbers, identify measures such as 1 pound=16 ounces, 1 week=7days, 1 gallon=4quarts, 1 foot=12 inches; addition and subtraction facts Families 1-11; story problems with addition or subtraction; and Speed Drill – students have 1and half minutes to complete 12 addition and subtraction problems (4 sets of these)
PHONICS: For written test– write letter sounds, write special sounds in words (study Chart 6, 7,8,9,10), write words with special sounds and spelling words, identify and circle special sounds in words; and oral test -practice reading one-syllable words with one or two vowels, and words with special sounds from Chart 6,7,8,9,10.
The Handbook for Reading (apple book) is your “Phonics Bible”. Have your child read letter sounds, blends with long and short vowel sounds, and words to you. You could also dictate sounds, blends, and clue words for special sounds to your child for him/her to write. Your child should be memorizing the special sounds and clue words for Charts 6 and 7. We learn these so that students can use this when sounding out new words. They should read each special sound and clue word and then spell them (example: “ck in duck, c – k”). You could make a matching game with the clue words on one type of card and the special sounds on another, mix them up, and have your child match the clue word with the special sound. Note: blends should be read as one sound, not sounding out each letter (example: “la”, not “l – a”).
Spelling: For homework, I sent home a Spelling Bee sheet. Students need to write their words 3 times by Thursday and return in their red folder on Thursday for extra points. Each day students should study their words.

Bible: Bible verse: Exodus 20:4 “Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.”
Bible stories for this week are Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52) and Jesus calms the storm (Matthew 8:23-27)
HANDWRITING: As a motivation to write neatly on handwriting tests, I am allowing any student who earns an A on the handwriting does not have to do one seatwork page for handwriting.
If your child is not getting A’s on the Writing tests, he/she should practice writing at home using lined paper that we use at school (with dotted lines in the middle). You could have your child write the spelling words, his/her name (which is also graded on the writing tests). Using the Manuscript Guide (copy in your Orientation packet), have your child practice writing the alphabet and numbers, and words. Make sure that they are holding their pencils correctly.
Language: we are in Chapter 10- learning to identify the complete subject and complete predicate and practicing identifying Prepositions and Object of Prepositions.
We classify sentences in the same way EVERY time by asking these questions: First, find the Subject noun (which answers the question What or Who); then Verb (Action – what did the subject DO?); then Adverb (which answers questions How? When? Where?) and Adjective (which answers what kind? Which one? How many?). There are no questions to find the Article Adjectives, we just know that we must look for A, An, The. To find the Preposition, look for a word that connects 2 words in the sentence and ask Whom or What after the Prep and if the answer is a noun, then it is the Preposition. To find the Object of the Preposition, ask Who or What after the preposition and the noun that answers is the object of the preposition.
Reading: Comprehension Test will include a short story and questions about the story. Please read the assigned pages each day from the reading calendar and initial the date on the calendar after reading. The reading calendar can be folded and kept in the reader or in the red folder.
