Meet the Teacher Letter & Class Information

Fourth Grade Information

Amanda Swanson

E-Mail: [email protected]

Meet the teacher flyer 2022

Welcome to fourth grade!  I am really excited about this year. I am looking forward to getting to know each one of your children.  Your child’s academic and spiritual growth will be an awesome thing to see throughout this year. In order for us to have an effective year, it will be necessary for us to work as a team.  Keeping that in mind, there are a couple of ways to stay informed about your child’s classroom. The class website (www.fbcseagles.com) will allow you to stay informed of upcoming events, tests, quizzes, and homework assignments. This information will be posted at the end of the day, every Friday, for the upcoming week. If you have any questions or concerns, you can also email me at the above address. If your concern cannot be addressed through e-mail, feel free to leave a message in the school office (643-3725), and I will return the call as soon as possible. In either case, I will try to respond within 24 hours during the normal school week.

Headmaster

Grades will be posted on headmaster by Tuesday each week.

Classwork/Seatwork

Each day students will have seatwork, based on what we are learning that day, with time given to complete it in class. If this is not completed within that time, it must be completed upon return to class the following day. I will do random seatwork checks throughout each nine weeks. These will be 16 points each.

AR & reading at home

Students should read at home for at least 15 minutes each night. If they complete and AR book, they can take the quiz upon return to school. AR quizzes can not be taken at home.

The Green Folder (graded tests and homework)

This will go home every Tuesday and must return on Friday morning. The Green Folder will contain graded tests and any weekly homework that may be assigned. Only tests that receive a grade of D or F must be signed by a parent or guardian. Any student without signed papers will receive a recess detention. If you have any questions or concerns about a particular paper, please place a sticky note on the inside pocket and I will check into the problem. I will not take late homework, unless your child has been out or an emergency occurs.  “I forgot” will not be accepted as an excuse. Homework cannot be turned in early. It will need to be turned in upon return to school. All work must be shown and in the student’s handwriting in order to get credit for homework.

Protective Book Covers

Math, Science, Social Studies, and Literature books all need to be covered by Monday, August 15, 2022. Use only the thick brown paper to cover the books (like the ones you get from the grocery store).  This is the best way to protect the book.  Also, no tape should touch the books.  If a cover tears or is damaged, it must be replaced.  If a student doesn’t have their book properly covered, they will receive a recess detention every day until it is. Please see the tutorial on the class website if you have questions.

Conduct

Your child’s conduct grade will be posted on Headmaster by Tuesday of each week.   Every day they have the opportunity to earn 20 points towards their weekly conduct grade.  If a student is written up, the conduct grade for the day is automatically dropped to a zero.

4 (20 pts.) – Great conduct with a possible 1st warning

3 (15 pts.) – Chose not to listen to 1st warning

2 (10 pts.) – Behavior journal to be signed, with consequence per teacher (examples may include, but are not limited to, recess detention, silent lunch, after school detention, writing lines or assignment, etc.)

1 (0 pts.) – receive a write-up and will be sent to the office

Math:  In math this year, we will use the Purposeful Design curriculum.  Our units will cover place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, fractions, decimals, and measurement.  The study guides for math tests will be found at the end of each chapter. We will go over the correct answers prior to the test, but DO NOT work ahead.

Science

In science this year we will use the Purposeful Design curriculum. The students will complete units in life science, physical science, earth science, and the human body: wellness. The study guides for science will be found at the end of each chapter in the workbook. We will go over the correct answers prior to the test, but DO NOT work ahead.

Social Studies

In social studies this year, we will study the regions throughout the United States.  The students will learn about the geography, people, culture, and history of these areas.  The tests for this curriculum require that the students be able to apply the information that they have learned, not to just memorize it.  In addition to tests and quizzes the students will complete in class projects and assignments.  The study guides for social studies tests will be completed in class prior to the test. It is your child’s responsibility to fill in the answers that are missing on the study guide. We will go over the correct answers in class.

Spelling

We will use the Purposeful Design book for spelling this year. Word lists can be found on the class website or in the student’s spelling book.

Bible

We will use the Purposeful Design curriculum for Bible.  This curriculum is designed to help the students learn about who Christ is, to grow as Christians, and to witness to others. Bible tests will be on Mondays (unless stated otherwise on the website). A study guide will be posted on Friday on the website. The study guide, as well as weekly workbook pages, should be reviewed before each test.

Literature

In Literature we will use the Purposeful Design textbook, as well as individual readers.  This textbook is broken into different units. Within each unit, the students learn different literary concepts such as plot, characters, and theme. The test will generally contain vocabulary and comprehension questions. The vocabulary will be input into their literature folder. There is not a way to study for the comprehension section of the test except to reread the story for the week.

Read and Think / Cold Reads

Cold reads are graded timed reading & comprehension quizzes. This is not something that you can prepare in advance or study for. Students are given a passage to read and then are quizzed on their comprehension of the given passage.

Language

This year in language we will use the Abeka curriculum.  This curriculum is designed to teach the students the eight parts of speech. Each test is cumulative and will contain information that has already been tested in prior units. At the end of each unit there is a guide to help review for the test, but you will need to review all concepts in the unit to be fully prepared.

Mid-Morning/Working Snack

The students will have an opportunity to eat a snack mid-morning as long as the classroom stays clean and free of snack trash on the floor. They may only have snacks that are not high in sugar. They may not have candy or anything that is messy or requires utensils. Students are allowed to drink water throughout the day as long as it is in a clear (see through) closed container.

Birthday Parties:  If you would like to bring in a treat for your child’s birthday, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can plan for it. I can not always fit it in if I don’t know about it in advance.  If you choose to have a birthday party for your child off of campus and want to send invitations out to the class, there must be an invitation for each child.  We will not send out invitations if there is not one for every child.

Week of Nov. 29th

I hope that all of you had an awesome Thanksgiving break and were able to get some rest. I sent this week’s agenda a few days ago via email because the website wasn’t working, but it’s below just in case.

For this week, be practicing your flashcards each evening. This includes addition and subtraction up to 20 as well as multiplication and division facts through 12. We will continue to be taking speed drills as the weeks go on and flashcards will help your child with math fact fluency.

The students worked on their Regions social studies project before the Thanksgiving break and did an amazing job! Parents, you should be proud of your kiddos. They really took the reigns with each of their projects, got very creative yet informative, and finished with some great posters! I’m pretty sure they had a good time while making them as well 🙂 This week they are preparing for the Christmas program. I hope all of you and your families can make it out to the program next Tuesday.

I have emailed a link to everyone to show some of the goings on in the classroom. If you do not get the email, please let me know as soon as possible.

Announcements:

I hope you all are doing well in the midst of the last 2 weeks. I wanted to let you know that we will not be testing this week, but will be mostly reviewing. Hopefully, this will alleviate some stress and let us get back into the swing of things before testing next week.

Starting next Monday, I will be sending home a homework / test folder. These folders will have any homework that is to be done during the week, as well as graded test papers that need to be signed and returned. Your child is expected to have their homework completed and test papers signed and on my desk by Thursday morning. When a student turns in late homework, only 60% of the grade will be given (unless your child has been out excused or an emergency occurs). Late homework will only be accepted for 1 week after the due date. Any student without signed papers will receive a recess detention. Just to note: if seatwork / classwork is left incomplete by the end of class, it is expected to be finished by the following morning. For example, if we are working on vocabulary and your child does not finish in class, it should be taken home and done by the next morning.

*this folder will be replacing the BEE binder. If your child has not already brought home the BEE binder, I will be sending it with them this week*

***It is very important that you review your child’s WB (workbook) daily with them. This will help if they are struggling to understand a particular concept. Workbooks also can aide as a study guide for any upcoming tests. These WB pages are done daily in class and then gone over together. Welcome!

August 2021

Dear Parents and Students:

Welcome to Fourth grade. My name is Amanda Swanson, and I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child this year.  Our class will be achieving a lot this year in terms of academic growth, greater self-confidence and improved social skills. Good communication between parent, teacher, and student is VITAL for the academic success of the child. I can’t wait to get to know you and the students! We are going to have a great year!

Snacks: Your child needs to bring his/her snack to school each day. We will be having snack time in the afternoon. Please make sure that snacks are sugar free if possible. No candy is allowed. Please do not send in food that contains peanuts due to peanut allergies. Your child may also bring water in a clear plastic container (you may want to label it) that he/she will access after recess, during snack time and other times throughout the day.

Grades: All subject grades are based on an 800 point rubric except for Math which will be 1000. The points may vary per nine weeks but it will always be close to 800 or 1000.  I plan to update grades weekly.

Conduct: There will be a grade given for conduct each day. I will be communicating with you in case we are having any problems. I am praying that this will not be an issue and please stress with your child how important good behavior will be for our classroom.

Class Rules:

Follow Directions.

Keep hands and feet to yourself.

Stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise.

Adjust voice and noise level to suit activity.

Respect the people and things in our classroom.

We will listen courteously when the teacher and/or others are talking.

Homework: This will be listed on my website each week. My prayer for this year is that homework will be fairly minimal. I will not take homework late unless your child has been out for an excused absence or an emergency occurs. Any worksheets or workbook page(s) that do not get finished in class will be homework. Please encourage them to get their work done in class.

Graded Papers:  All graded test papers will be sent home in a test folder. There will be a sheet in the folder for you to date and sign. Please return the folder and test papers the next day. I will keep all of the test papers on file.

Uniform Policy: I will enforce the dress code. Please read the student handbook for more information on this topic. If you have a question about what your child may or may not wear, please contact the school office before you send your child to school.

School time: Your child needs to be in class anytime between 7:40-8:00am. Please make sure that your child is in the classroom by 8:00am. A student will be marked tardy if they enter the class after 8:00am. After 8:00am, your child needs to go to the office wo get an excused tardy. Each morning your child will come into your class, turn in homework or any note for the office, unpack his/her book bag, and sit down as they begin their morning routine.

Birthday Parties: If you would like to bring in a treat for your child’s birthday, please let me know a week in advance so that I can plan for it. Please do not bring party favors or prizes. If you choose to have a birthday party for your child off campus and want invitations handed out to the class, there must be an invitation for each child.

Please don’t forget to check out our school website: www.fbcseagles.com. This is where I will post information such as announcements, test schedules, workbook pages, homework assignments, etc. Please be patient with me because there may be times when I do not get things posted as quickly as I would like to.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at [email protected] or call the school office at 985-643-3725. Communication is best done by email. I will check my email daily and get back with you as soon as possible.  Please be mindful that I do have a family so I may not answer emails on the weekends or late in the evenings. Also, please be sure to check your email daily in case I need to send updated information to the parents. I also ask that when you pick up in the afternoon that this is done as efficiently as possible; if you need to speak with me, please contact me in advance to arrange a time when I can give you my full attention. If you need to bring anything to your child after school has started, please take it to Student Services and not to the classroom.

I ask that you remember that I am human and I will make mistakes. If you find something that doesn’t make sense or isn’t clear, please let me know in a kind and loving manner. Please be in prayer for me and all my students as start this new year. I am looking forward to a wonderful school year!

Mrs. Amanda Swanson

Hurricane Make Up Days- Virtual Days

Dear Parents:
Please read this whole email. We are going to be two days short this year because of having to take so many hurricane days. In order to make this as PAINLESS as possible, here’s the plan:
  • We will take two virtual days (meaning at home) during the Family Holidays/Mardi Gras Holidays
  • BUT the teachers will go ahead this week and assign two assignments in Core Subjects only  (Math/English/ELA for grades 1-8 /Science/Social Studies)
  • Students will have this weekend, next week, or if you choose, the actual holidays to complete these assignments
