Elementary Music

Our God loves music! What a wonderful gift He gives us! Each of us have been created to praise Him – whether with song, the playing of instruments, God-glorifying dance, listening and hearing His Word, and prayer.  Pointing students to Christ while teaching the basics of music and dance.

As always, the annual elementary Christmas Play is part of the learning process in the 1st semester of music for 1st – 5th grades.

I am so excited about this new school year!  I will be teaching your student in the Visual & Performing Arts (Music & Art) classes.  Each class will meet one day a week.

My name is Linda Vicknair. This is my 18th year teaching at First Baptist Christian School and 14th year teaching Music & Art.  I am an active member of First Baptist Church where I sing in the church choir and play handbells. I also teach beginner piano after school.

The Arts are an integral part of your child’s education.  The arts not only are important in learning and creative thinking, but they also help a student to learn better in other subject areas. The arts not only teach creativity, but encourage students to think creatively, experiment, innovate, and to seek new ways to solve a problem.  Our God is THE CREATOR.  That alone, should tell us that creativity is important.  Learning a specific skill set doesn’t have the value in today’s world that it once did. Learning how to be more creative (and thus adaptable) is what prepares our students for life beyond the classroom.

Music was my first love.  It was vital in my family and childhood and continues to be an important factor in my life.  We are created to glorify God.  What better way to do that than through music?

Elementary music classes will use the Musicplay curriculum, an award-winning music program for 1st-6th grades. Each lesson outlines concepts and skills taught in each grade. Musicplay includes seasonal songs, fun songs, rounds, partner songs, folk music, multicultural music and choral music. Students will sing, play instruments, move to music, listen, create and learn to read and write music. Important concepts are taught through play.

During the 2nd nine weeks, students in 1st – 5th will take a break from our regular music classes to focus on preparations for our annual Christmas Musical.   Information will be posted on the school website about drama, solo and dance auditions.  There is a link on the Elementary Classes page as well.  The performance is scheduled for December 6, 2022 – save the date!

New this year:

4th & 5th Music Club – Thursday, 2:20 -2:50 (recess time). Learn to read music and play various instruments.  Maybe we’ll perform at the Christmas play or in a chapel!

6th grade electives are divided into sessions.  They will come to me for the 6th session.

Donations for music are always appreciated.  If you have an instrument that you no longer need and would be willing to donate, that would be amazing!  I really want the students to have hands-on experience with various musical instruments.

I am expecting a fantastic year with your student, and you!

Enrichment:
